My 1000 Gallon Glass Aquarium (1000+ Gallons for Dummies)

Congrats on the spawning PBass in your avatar Mayo.

I debated whether to run gravel or a bare bottom in the pond. I want to have some plants, and experience tells me that with even only a light to moderate current plants will tend to fall over. Even though I probably have a 45 gallon drum worth of gravel I have accumulated over my years in the hobby, I decided to go with a bare bottom and silicone the plants in place. It's sort of a guessing game as you don't get to really see your aquascaping until you fill the tank/pond, but it's better than nothing. Some plants are simply break points to separate the tanks into mini areas to (hopefully) alleviate fighting. Others are planted more densely to actually provide hiding places for the smaller fish. I also have three or four large pieces of wood to transplant as well. I hope to fill the tank this afternoon once the GE Silicone I have finished its 24 hour cure. Stay tuned. :)

I have a '87 GN and three '87 Turbo Limiteds, which are more or less what you would consider a T-Type. Good on you for knowing what a T-Type is.

Im a buick guy, I had a '86 GN and I currently have a '70 skylark, and Im think about another GN or T-type.

Ok. Got the pond setup. Not really an afternoon project, but that's the time I had. Some random thoughts during the process...

  • I can really notice the fish "stretching their legs" compared to being in tanks. I think this is one reason why fish rarely reach the same size in a tank that they do in the wild. They don't get enough "exercise".
  • Nothing dissipates aggression like space. Fish that were at it constantly in the tanks are co-existing peacefully in the pond...for now at least.
  • Tem-class PBass grow like weeds. My pinima are already 8 inches long when I measured them. It was hard keeping up with 50+% water changes twice a week since getting them, but the results are worth it.
  • I wonder how long the black aro is going to sulk on the bottom in a corner under the floating Ficus. Whoever said aros can't stay still has never seen mine.
  • This amount of water needs a lot of flow just to get any discernible movement in the water.
  • Gonna have to watch the temp closely. I only have 500W on it currently. The 230 does fine with 250W as the garage has in floor heat.

On with the pics...

Pinima and kelberi chillin' together. Pinima was constantly harrassing the kelberi in the tank not an hour before.

2 kels, 2 pinima, and a mutt. Mutts are 5" for reference.

From the left...kel, mutt, pinima, mutt, kel, pinima.

I'll try to get some video this week after I tie things up with the tanks and pond in preparation for more arrivals this weekend. :)

The pond looks good....I think some lily pads would've looked perfect in there, and probably gave your aro something else to sulk under ;)

Well, time for a quick update I guess. The fish all seem to be fine even though I can't budge the temp above 78[SUP]o[/SUP]F with 1000W. I'll have to wait until the 2kW inline heater shows up to crank up the temps. The larger pinima has claimed the center of the tank for himself for the time being. I have three different WC temensis, WC adult orinocensis, and some xingu showing up in a few days. We'll see if the pin can still hold court. The aro is out and about but still very skittish. It's amazing how much the fish jump...not just the aro either. I'll see if I have time to shoot a video tonight.
