My 1000 Gallon Glass Aquarium (1000+ Gallons for Dummies)

Sorry for the delay. I've been busy with work the past few weeks and never had time to work on the tank. I just spent Friday, Saturday, and Sunday plumbing the tank and moving the fish over. I still have lots of little gremlins to sort out. But overall I'm happy with the outcome, even if it took a lot longer than I would have liked. More details and better photos to follow...

I hate to be a *****, but all that work and effort on the amazing looking natural background and set up and the first thing that catches my eye is the big ugly PVC pipe returns hanging down in front of it! Hope they're just temporary, is there no way they could be concealed a bit better??

Petty gripes aside, that is an amazing looking tank with fantastic stock. Looking forward to more pics!

Well, the pipes are like that to allow me to tweak the water flow. 12,000gph flow takes a little planning. ;) One of the gremlins to sort is the fact that right now my tree is moving in the current. Having said that, I like the outflows where they are, or at least external like they are. The initial plan was to have them coming out of the boxes through the background. For reasons that will become apparent when I post more pictures of the setup, that's not feasible. And I think having the outflows plumbed through the background would be an uglier wart...at least that was my decision. I guess I could paint the PVC. But to be honest, they don't bother me at all.

I guess the only way to conceal them would be to put them behind the background. Want to guess how many holes would have to be in the background to facilitate 12,000gph exchange between the two sides of the background? :nilly:

Good point, 12000gph is a hell of a lot, I can see why you'd want to be able to adjust it! A bit of paint or "weathering" will make them a lot less obvious. I'm sure the folks that did the background and the tree etc would be able to make some great natural looking pipes! ;)

Regardless, it really is am amazing set up!!

Have you considered using Venturi returns? I like them because you can easily change the direction of the flow. Venturi nozzles and ball valves on each return line works in adjusting flow rate and direction.

I want the flow pointed straight at the front glass. The design is for the water to exit the outflows, cause mild turbulence on the surface on it's way to the front glass, hit the glass and travel down, then travel back to the overflow box along the bottom. So far, it seems to be generally working as intended. Some tweaking is still in progress.
