My 1000 Gallon Glass Aquarium (1000+ Gallons for Dummies)

I assume you are using the the flex material from Universal Rocks, is it hard to cut etc? and why did you choose Universal Rocks over Designs by Nature etc?

Coming from just a random fish loving Albertan, I'm hoping next time I am up in GP I can maybe hit you up to take a peak at this sweet tank. Let me know because I totally would check it out.

Nice! Looking good!

Apologies in advance for the unsolicited suggestion, but using black ABS may make the returns a little more discreet.

The returns are really a non-factor to me. But since they seem to be freaking everyone out, and since this is a sort of a "how-to" thread, I'll fix them to match the background. Won't be for awhile though as I need to finalize placement first.

Yes, the material is all quite flexible, including the background itself. I dealt with Universal Rocks for two reasons. First, I enquired with DBN, but the project just wasn't coming together with them (they were sorta interested, but not really...or they were just unorganized getting back to me...was the vibe I got as I recall now months after the fact). Second, this is a custom one-off setup which I believe Stuart (Universal Rocks) is much more adept at handling. You want a stock background for a 90g or 180g or whatever...look at what UR and DBN offer and pick what you like. You need something custom, in terms of size or design, talk to UR as they can make it happen. My 2 cents. ;)

PS. The little teaser photo doesn't come close to doing the tank justice. Once I have the lighting sorted and get the plants in, I'll put up lots of pictures of everything.

You're welcome to come look at it any time. You can PM me for contact info anytime. As you can tell from my progress, I'm not home a lot. lol.

Sorry for the delay. I've been busy with work the past few weeks and never had time to work on the tank. I just spent Friday, Saturday, and Sunday plumbing the tank and moving the fish over. I still have lots of little gremlins to sort out. But overall I'm happy with the outcome, even if it took a lot longer than I would have liked. More details and better photos to follow...

WOW

Well, after picking up a few Ecotech Radion LED lights and not liking the result, I'm still working on the lighting for the tank. I think for the time being I'm going to go back to T5 HO lighting. I've read recommendations for anywhere from 1-3 watts per gallon for freshwater. Even getting 1watt per gallon (1000w) is going to take some effort and money. Right now the plan is for four rows of lighting, with two twin 39W and a single twin 54W ballasts in each row. That puts me right around 1000w. I set up a column of 39W ballasts at one end of the tank and it seemed adequate. My plan is to run these until the bulbs need changing. Maybe by then I'll have had time to figure out a DIY LED solution...yeah right.

Pictures incoming once the lighting issues are resolved to my satisfaction.
