My 1000 Gallon Glass Aquarium (1000+ Gallons for Dummies)

i may have missed it but how much does it cost to run a tank like that.

That's a good question. The tank sits in my garage with the in-floor heat set fairly warm. I have a natural gas demand water heater, so I just change 100 or so gallons every day with hot water and the heater never comes on...it's not even plumbed in atm to be honest. I'm not sure how to figure out the cost to heat the water...I don't think it's huge. I could find out what 3000g of water costs. That might be interesting to know. I should point out though that when the system was designed, I stressed ease of maintenance over cost savings. I definitely met that goal. I have never seen my filter media since setting the tank up.

THE TANK

It’s taken me probably six weeks to finally settle on my tank. I started out trying to decide between 120X36X30 and 120X36X36. I found out that the 36” height almost doubled the price, so I abandoned that and started looking wider. The next decision was 120X36X30 or 120X48X30. To my surprise, the extra foot of depth was much less expensive than the extra 6” of height, and that’s the direction I went. I arrived at the shop building the tank to sign the paper work, and during the process I happened to ask about bigger tanks. I was told that the glass sheets are 11’3” long, so I wouldn’t be able to go much bigger unless I wanted to try to track down some exotic (read $$$) pieces of glass from Germany or Japan…no thanks. But I did ask if I could make my tank bigger to use a full sheet on the front. That is how the final length of 130” was arrived at. That is as big as the tank can be made with glass available in NA after it’s trimmed for use. My quote was completed, I paid a $6,000 or so deposit, and left to complete a 10 hour round trip journey to pick up some fish from Jeff Rapps. The quote for that 130X48X30 810 gallon tank is shown below.

During the long drive home with my new fish from Jeff, I had a gnawing question. How much would it cost to go wider? I called the shop back the next business day, waited a week or so for the tank builder to get me a new quote, and found that the final price was acceptable to me. And that is how I arrived at a final tank dimension of 130X60X30, or 1013 gallons.

I have to ask you this question...what do you do for your living ???? and why do you have to taunt us with your flashy big tank...huh...that is plain cruel...

Just to add to the pile of admiration, excellent thread, excellent tank. Having just been though an ice storm here in Toronto, I wonder if you have thought through possible power outages, etc.

A massive inspiration! My next house has to have space for a tank of these proportions!

I have a generator sitting next to the tank. I did have a power outage for a day about a month ago. The power went off at 1am. I went out at 5:30am or so and fired up the generator and ran the glass bead filter and air pump. The two Ultimas were left sitting for about 16 hours until I got home from work. I backwashed them and turned them back on. Never had a problem. The temp won't drop much more than 4[SUP]o[/SUP] even on the coldest days because it's so big. I haven't even had a heater attached to it since November. Regular water changes are keeping in in the desired range.
