On a lighter note, perhaps you can cut your glass height-wise and make to panels for future use in another build. Perhaps side panels on the next LARGER build. (indeed I said larger) The wife will say yes when she sees this one up and running.

:wall: That which does not kill us, makes us stronger....

Want tp punch that person in the nose every time something like this happens to me. :nilly:

Sorry to see the troubles you are having. Wish I was more experienced in the DIY tank field so I could add some profound insight that would help. Alas I have none.

Good luck, you have a good build, and am sure you will figure this out.

I will definetly have the broken glass cut so it can be used for a future project. This will delay things for a few weeks but maybe that's a good thing. It will be about 6 weeks I guess until I can fill it up again figuring 2 weeks to get the glass, another week to cure the silicone and and other 3 weeks or so to apply and cure the PC......gotta love it!

Haha ok, couldn't resist with the global warming. Sorry to hear/see your glass decided to be stubborn and crack on ya.
About the etching...To rough up the glass you can buy a glass-sanding wheel attachment for your cordless drill, much like a wire-brush attachment. Most hardware stores carry this. This will etch the surfuce up nicer and easier than trying to do so with sandpaper. Good luck with the rebuild, I'd say you got all your angles covered this time around so I am sure success will be had.

Ok, I wish you had talked to us FIRST before trying that but oh well lesson learned. I would have told you NOT to attempt it.

If you want to go with acrylic, it must be cell cast. Call ACI Plastics and get a quote, then call Nationwide plastics and have them beat that quote, then call Laird plastics and have them match that quote. Order your acrylic from Laird.

I think you should still go with glass though. Acrylic doesn't really make sense until you're around 1" or more. At that point glass is just too dang heavy and expensive.

DO NOT put any silicone on the inside of the tank this time. Put it on the frame and on the front of the glass, but don't let it squish out to the inside of the tank.

You can rough up the glass with emory cloth, but I don't think it is necessary if you allow the PC to properly cure before filling.

DO NOT put sand in the tank again before test filling it.

DO NOT try to pry the glass loose again :D Just razzing you bro. I've done way more costly f*** ups.

Pete, once the glass has been laid in the frame and the area illustrated very skillfully in red has been siliconed, what do I want to do with the gap around the edge of the glass. In my first fail, I filled this gap with silicone as well so in was allmost level with the glass. Should I just fill this with PC?

Oh, and thanks for the DO NOT fill with sand and DO NOT pry advice! Top Shelf!

Oh ok, well first off, I forgot you framed it like my tank :D I'm such a tard sometimes. Too many projects to keep up with.

What I did is put a hard rubber strip over the Dow 795. Too tired to go find the pic on my thread. In short, I filled the gap with Dow 795 then stuck the hard rubber strip over it. A small bead of Dow 795 was applied to the backside of the acrylic where the hard rubber overlaps. The acrylic was roughed up for extra adhesion.

I'll take a pic tomorrow if you don't understand. The hard rubber was obtained from a rubber supply house and cut to size (1.5" width). The thickness was 3/4" I believe. Enough to be flush with the plywood sheathing.
