Have you considered sand blasting the tree...I've seen some really nice sandblasted hardwood, to bring the wood to life in 3D...Up in the pacific northwest they do amazing things with wood...Your craftsmanship is impeccable...

No Zen i have not thought about sand blasting.. Honestly, I have never used one on wood.. I don't know anyone i could borrow one from. great idea though.. and i'm going to look into that.

This has been my hold back on this tree.. I'm stumped on what to use to shape it down and give it life.. I could use carving tools but the risk of snapping a branch is high.. I am thinking a dremel with a rasp bit to shape it down. that would take hours and hours but it seems my best option.. The best bet would be to order a hand held carving tool.. one that you can put bits in and control the speed with a foot pedal, and use different bits.. the problem is the thin branches.. I'm not used to dealing with something so fragile..

I will give it a whack with the dremel this weekend..

Sears has them for fairly cheap...with the sand you can wear away the softer wood and the hardest wood stays tall...really easy to round the smaller branches...I'm sure you'd really appriciate the effects you can get by sandblasting... Google: sandblasted wood
you can see the effects are stunning...

Man o man, that is sweet! With sandblasting, you can also cover or tape up some parts of the wood to retain its original texture to contrast the sandblasted areas.

Zen you have for sure got my attention with the sand blasting.. this weekend i will search for one.. Sears is a 5 hour round trip on the other side of the island.. so I'm pretty sure i can find something on my side of town here.

Did some searching online and I'm amazed at the detail you can achieve with one.. Sweet man.. thank you. I'm going to do my best to find one. this might make the tree a little longer in the making.. but that's fine cause i have some CK's going in friday.. and then the 13" arow next week.. the water is Crystal clear now that the barbs have been in..

Picks of the new fish will be this weekend...

That is the most amazing first time build tank I have seen.I made so many mistakes on my first tank and you have bypass it on your first build.
Do you think you could get enough scrap wood and build me a second home there at Hawaiian Ocean View? I have three acres there, lol. All ocean view !!!
