My Amphilophus Lyonsi Journal

Thought they went extinct in the wild?
Yeah I've loved every second of them so far. Looks like great minds think alike when sourcing em haha.
I have been doing some checking, and there still seems to be a viable population in the Rio Parti and other areasin the Darian, a wild and quite remote area.
it is controlled by the indigiones Guna people, which holds promise for its survival as a species, because the Guna are very environmentally aware, and excellent stewards of the land..
It is said to be a very red variant.

That's awesome! would be cool to see pictures or someone bring in a pair to introduce to the captive population.

@kenscichlids just took some pics of my pair for you. Not the best but the male is 8-9” I assume and female about 7-7.5”. These guys change colors often and fast. The male gets a powder blue face, an ombré of green to yellow on the body and a trimac like red breast and amazingly vibrant orange fins while in breeding dress. They are not breeding at the moment and just an example of his colors.

Female is more drab but the male gets very aggressive when he wants to breed. Otherwise they get along great. She’s the last of 3 females I kept and not necessarily my favorite but she’s held her own the best so I’m happy overall. I’m thinking of growing out another pair and keeping them in side by side tanks. These are one of my fav fish of all time.

One thing I might should make note of is I use both LED and T5 UVB on this tank as an experiment on coloration and any health differences long term

Awesome thread, much respect to your dedication to keeping your project going. So many people cycle stock all the time, I myself used to as well. It's nice to see you didn't and got some beautiful Lyonsi because of it and it's been great watching their progress in your thread. Lyonsi are one of my favorite cichlids. I want to get a group when I can muster up space for more tanks as I really miss my old Lyonsi. I hope you don't mind if I share some pics of mine. If you do just PM me and I'll remove my pics.IMG_1969.jpegIMG_1966.jpeg
