I don't know if this is at all useful for someone attempting to build a pond, but I've been building pools all summer, and some of the techniques could be used to build a pond as well. In addition to the single piece fiberglass variety, there is a type built out of poolkrete and a liner (I knew nothing about swimming pools before I started, so forgive me if I am over-explaining). Anyway, this poolkrete stuff is basically vermiculite with small amounts of cement so it is porous. This allows out any water between the liner and poolkrete out, and is less damaged by flooding than concrete. The stuff is also much more easily spread and easier to work with than concrete, and although fairly soft, if suitable for the job. Point is that I bet that stuff would be perfect for building ponds as well, just swap pool liner for pond liner. Also being that pool-krete is much softer than concrete, it could be broken out more reasonably if the pond is regretted.
