Sajica is in here, getting pretty big probably 4.5" now

Big boy the Panamensis has himself this 55 gallon with just a couple swordtails as tankmates. He seems to be getting bulkier all the time, not sure if he's still getting any longer. He's probably about 7 years old now.

Update time
After Big Boy's passing I had his a 55 gallon empty for a while, debating if I should take it down or get new fish. Of course, "get new fish" won in the end.
So I picked up two small groups of cichlids from Kevin at Tangled Up In Cichlids (good experience by the way, happy with how Kevin is running the show after Jeff handed TUIC off to him)
I got 4 Amatitlania Septemfasciata "Rio Corinto" F2
and 4 Amatitlania (cryptoheros?) Chetumalensis "Rio Sarstun"

Here are a couple of pics. They are small guys at the moment, Septs are 1.5-2" and Chets are 1". Have been feeding lots of NLS and doing WCs, hoping they grow fast and color up.

And a shot of their tank, basic but gets the job done with lots of top-half cover.

Nice choices.. love the chets. I got 6 from Kevin too.. they're currently baby sitting some V. breidohri fry along with the breidohri parents and a group of T. meeki in a 210.. all courtesy of Kevin @ TUIC..

I tried the septemfasciata last year but the group i had were a lil more aggressive than I wanted.. but still like them alot and will try them again at some point..

Look forward to seeing your progress..??

Nice, if your chets are adults I would be interested to see some pics to see how these guys may look. The septs seem about average for amatitlania, but they are small guys, will see how it goes. I probably won't be able to keep this number in here once they are full size, will probably split them up. For now the group setting protects the smaller individuals.

Actually mine are prolly the same size as yours.. I had a group last spring of the Rio Chahal (F3 from Aquatic Clarity) varient.. somehow over time went from 4 to 1 with no visible aggression and no water issues..

I actually tried to keep the 1 with a sole (killer) A. septemfasciata in a 20 Long.. but the septemfasciata was too aggressive and split them up.. 20 long definitely was too small.. I gave the chet and a panamensis to a buddy for his son's first tank and they seem to be doing well..

I started over with juvie chets and panamensis early this year.. here's a quick pic.. 20220403_124507.jpg20220403_124444.jpg I'll see if I can find pics of my previous Chet was prolly sub adult to adult .

Here's the V. Breidohris with some of their fry..20220403_124626.jpg20220403_124625.jpg

I think I just had an aggressive male Sep.. and my tank size was not ideal. most say theiy're not aggressive.. he killed 2 females and tore into my younger chet when I added the chet to the 20 long.. probably to be expected.. the 20 was my qt tank but the plan was to move the Seps to a 40B... I later added the Sep to a 125 with larger Nics and Cribroheros longimanus and had zero aggression..

20 gallon was part of the problem most likely, any cichlid can be territorial and that's not enough space for sure. But also I think there are other factors that matter as much or more than the tank size. It sounds like the Sep was in the 20 gallon before you dropped the chet in, he was established in the territory and the chet was an interloper, so was attacked. Also you say he killed 2 females, were they alone and in the 20 gallon? I have found convict types can be very unforgiving to their mates when there are no other cichlids to unite and defend against. I had a panamensis pair which bred and had no problems together when in a setup with extra panamensis and a larger hericthys. After that I put them solo in a 90 gallon, which should be more than large enough, male turned on the female and killed her.
Wish you better luck with your current group of cichlids!!
