Update time, I've got this much of the tank glued up so far, you can see the shape of the intergrated hood and I've marked in one of the pics where the water line will end up being, I also got some slatted doors for the stand so the sump area will have good ventilation.

nice, but with it being a wood tank, i'd be afraid of the overhanging areas drooping eventually from the weight. i'd make the stand equal to the tanks size. any reason why u did that?

^ agreed. Its a HUGE concern with glass, so I would worry more with a soft material like plywood that will inevitably flex...

I could understand if it was going behind a wall and the front want resing on 2x4's, but it doesnt seem you are going in that direction, and there is no explaination for the sides to overhang. The corners are the more important part (structurally) of every fish tank. Big or small. Wood or glass. There are no factors.

I love the idea of the incorporated hood, though. Some nice spot lights or even dish-lighting on top of the fixed part would create some awesome lighting effects.

IF you ultimately decide you are not going to alter the design, make a duplicate of the bottom of the tank with 1"(or thicker plywood) glue it up nicely, and fix it to the BOTTOM of the tank. not inside of it.
