For your next version, have the excess water from the pump go through the bio-media rather than just back to the sump. Not only will you be utilising the bio-media better but you can also keep your filter alive for extended periods - say if you ever need to isolate the tank for medication.

Exactly.

And Midnight, if I watched correctly the 2 tubes through which the water flows into the sump are connected to only one tube entering the sump, right? If the one tube entry without net ( or even the ones with net ) clog your tank might overflow.
What you should do is have the one safety tube / the one without mesh ) higher than the water level in your tank to act as a safeguard and you should have it entering the sump independently so it could really act as a safeguard tube in case something enters the other tube and /or clogs the net...

Sory if I misinterpreted the pixs......:)

Nice work.

Very creative use of egg crate and zip-ties.

Being a perfectionist myself, I can appreciate your attention to detail and use of "spacers" to keep everything clean and tight.
thanks
cheap, easy, and nice looking is what i was going for :D

I was lucky, my grandpa had a bunch laying around that he wasn't going to use. I get some extra if you need... If I didn't have that I was going to buy it at City Mill. I used some type of blade to cut it, all I did is I kept scoring the line that I wanted cut with that blade deep enough then snap it, sand the edges a little then good to go!
razor knife
i could have used one but i had thick stuff and sometimes it doesnt break easy :)

you lost me lol
what one doesnt have mesh?
both overflow inlets have mesh
and both go to one tube and down to the sump
i did duel inlets so if one clogs i still have another one

and it seems all my tanks are that way
any one of my tanks,if the overflow clogs im in trouble lol
:D

my point is that the one overflow inlet that is beside the two with mesh is at the same height as the other, meshed, ones....and both connect to the same entry into the sump...so, at the end of the day, although you have 3 inlets, in practical terms you have one...

the one without curved inlets should be higher up so that the water, if the meshed ones clog, when/when the level is rising( due to a cloged sump entry inlet ), flows through the higher inlet..

and the higher inlet should enter into the sump independently...

just my 2 cents, friend..

sorry i think your a bit lost and are making me lost lol :grinno:
i dont know where you are getting 3 inlets from
its just like all the other diy overflows but with 2 inlets instead of one
but ya my 2 inlets go to one pipe

all my tanks run the risk of overflowing if the overflow clogs
hard not to be that way on most of my tanks
:D

corona, ca
looks pretty good nice job..

only thought that wasnt already mentioned is that those check valves LOVE to fail once you suck some water through them a few times.. i found having a second one that you take off and use as a cap is a good solution to this problem
