Hi, Sorry for being a complete novice but i plan on doing this for my 180 gal. What size tank would you recommend as the sump? So you control the flow into the sump to match the outflow from the pump? Could you have a float operated valve to make sure if the power goes out the inflow is cut off when it gets too high? Once again sorry for being a noob.

Thanks in advance

Tom

for a 180g, youre looking at a 45-60g sump

as far as the other information youre looking for about flow rates and general overflow operation, it is explained HERE and HERE

also try doing a quick search through the DIY section. there are lots of threads with explanations as well as designs that can help you out.

Thanks bitteraspects, this information is very handy. I looked today at some 60 gal storage containers that were said to be able to hold water however i arrived at the conclusion that the barrier separating compartments would be too hard to secure. Making me turn to a fish tank for ease of construction.

p.s i did try searching for information but hundreds of topics come up when searching and its hard to find a good one.

Thanks again.

I have some plastic drawers similar to what is in some of the diy articles here. Which do you think is the better rout. I was thinking a 100 litre container with the stacked draws elevated and off to one side with just water and the pump in the container. What media do you suggest and in what order?

Thank you for answering my questions.

the drawer method works great and is used a lot here. i would suggest going that route if you dont mind the look. i mean, if it is going to be in a cabinet under the tank, who cares what it looks like, right?

as far as media goes. check here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285900

im needing to build a wet/dry sump for my 340ish gallon im building. the pump im going to use is a submersable pond pump from lowes thats 750 gph, may consider a 1000+ gph for a 3x an hr turn around - i guess that reduces my tank cleaning and keeps some happy health fish. ne ways. im needing help with a design for this. either stackable towers or a big rubbermaid tote. can ne one help with ths?
