My LFS + Hatchery pics .....

very nice looking set up

I am subscribed.

Looking through this has given me some ideas, I do like the 4 x10g done that way. Any shots of how you set up the filtration for the store. The inwall tank is a very nice touch.

So ? for you, what is your relationship with the local fish keepers if they bring in surrenders and fry?

I am also in the midst of putting together a fish store, I decided to make my restaurant a large tank display room and get all the nuts and bolts in play before finding a location. I am hoping for a late spring/mid summer 2010 securing of location with a fall opening.

The ten gallons I have a abs filter on the back that is air driven and sponge media & all the tanks are run by a blower. I do Not use central systems. I'm old school that still works & cost a heck of lot less then the Mars units etc..
10g are one of the cheapest tanks to use. This new second store I mixed in some 33 gal longs & 15 gallon tanks using sponge filters.
Lighting is the flor strip lights in the trade. I looked into T5s etc. but cost not worth it & the bulbs do not last long. I still have some florescent bulbs in current fixures that are seven years old.

Not sure in your neck of the woods but Location, Location & you know what I mean. If your new you have to be easy access but have low over head. I think big stores are out & not worth the cost to have. Go small scale 1500 sq ft which is more manageable with less over head cost. In today, you need to specialize in something & kinda of stick to it so customers will seak you out & travel to get what they want. Still have a side of this & that for the everday customer. Do not try to go head to head with the box stores or chains. Go different & be different. Be ready to adapt to change when needed.
Have employees on the same page as you because it can be your down fall if they are not.
Also you can not trust anyone but have to truct someone?

Sorry a lot more to it then I can write.

I keep thinking of writing a book on starting a LFS? Or do some consulting because I have been asked many times for advise or help.

good luck

clean looking store, I like how the tanks are not sitting empty but actually have water in them

Do you then order tanks for the customer or offer them the ones on the floor for sale.

like our main store which is bigger we try to stock some tanks & combos up to 55 gallons/75 gallon size then do pre orders for larger or custom tanks.
We usually have great deals this way because I do not have to tie up $ on large tanks/ expensive items & taking up space etc.
Fish & regular supplies (food, media , water treatments) are our focus because it is what most are coming in on a daily bases.
