Some kinds of palms just have simple leaves when they are small and look more like some kind of coarse grass. But I saw a couple pictures of L. spinosa seedlings and they were only ~10" tall and already with those fan-shaped leaves. I imagine it would be easy to control the size of that plant by trimming back the eaves when they get too large.

There are a few different palms that I want to try in ripariums. I already have some Chamaedorea cataractarum (a water-associated species from Central America) going in planters and so far they are doing great with real good root establishment.

I really gotta find some L. spinosa seeds.

Out here in Abu Dhabi they have some really big "forests" of salt water mangroves. I'm trying to get my local connection to take me out on his boat for a closer look and maybe some collection for my art supplies...

Hahaha, Abu Dhabi is beyond tropical, its desert right up to the Arabian Gulf. Along the coast they have big patches of mangrove islands. I only come out here every few months for work.

I hope to add to that journal some more tomorrow.

There are several really great plants to try in a brackish riparium.

Hey do a search for Licuala spinosa.

Is this Licuala spinosa? If so I'll try to ask the hotel gardener for a sample...

PS this entire garden is indoors! :headbang2
