Mystery snail breeding question...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they will find a place out of desperation. To get good reliable laying its best to drop the water line a minimum of the largest snails shell diameter. they can try to escape if not adequate space.

You will notice the female grooming at the top of the water line when she is preparing to lay eggs.

Last night I found a second batch of eggs behind the other filter!:WHOA: It's the same size as the first. About the size of a grape. :headbang2This is to cool!
Lets say I leave them alone in the tank. What are the ods of them making it? I have 2 young clown knives, 1 oscar, 1 rainbow shark, 1 african feather fin, 1 gold gourami, 6 giant danio. It's a 55 gal tank with several plants (fake) and large rock work with caves (real).:D

they hatch at pinhead size, i would say the odds with those tankmates are slim to nil of many surviving.

Thanks moonchild1970 for the great links.

msjinkzd, I was afraid someone would say what you did. Some times the truth realy does heart.
Do thay just fall off the glass and go to find a hidding spot?
Do they pretty mush hatch all at the same time?
Thanks for your help and I like the hair and tats!:cool-1:COOL

They hatch usually within a few hours of each other and fall down into the tank water. At the size where they are born, they can quickly get exhausted looking for food. If you want some to survive, I would suggest hatching them into a breeder trap so that you can target feed them (as well as safely keep up on your gravel vacs in the main tank) until they hit pea-sized. This will give them a better shot of surviving.

By breeder trap, you are talking the type that is a plastic box like for guppies and if so I gess you take out the v shaped part in the bottom. Or are you talking the net type? I also have a small critter keeper that I have converted over to a tank, with hear, air, and I could fit a filter system in there. Would something like that be good? Do you just scrape them off with a razer and and just put them in the new tank?:nilly:

any of those things work.

Typically I incubate the clutch. I take a small tupperware container and put a lightly damp folded paper towel in the bottom. I layer two dry, folded paper towels on top of that then place the clutch on the very top. I tightly lid this and float it in my tank. I remove the lid daily to remove any condensation or to replace the uppermost paper towel should it get really damp. Typically around day 7 you will notice that the clutch is turning a grey/blue color. The snails will hatch out on around day 9 or so. Once the clutch has a good grey/blue color you can manually open it into the breeder trap by gently crushing the clutch. I drop the clutch remnants into the breeder trap with teh young snails. They will graze on that for about 24-48 hours before supplemental feeding is needed. At that point, I feed a small amount twice daily.

Wow!! That sounds like alot of doing, but I will do my best. Makes you wounder how anything in the wild makes it. LOL Thanks:headbang2

What is the best way to get them off the glass?
My smart but wife said, lick em off and suck em up :naughty:
