in the wild they lay the clutches on reeds of grasses along the shore. The humidity is high and when they hatch they go into the shallows and leaf litter where they can graze without having to travel far. In a well maintained tank, there isn't often a ton of leaf litter and microfauna available, lol. Also, they can lay a couple clutches a week during the warm season each of which can produce up to 200 or so babies, even if 1/3 survive and reach maturity..it certainly ensures their survival.
