Need advice on raising GT fry.....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
@ spence..... yeah i thought about the brine shrimp hatchery, I know there is plenty of DIY videos, I'll check some out. I have some cichlid flakes i can grind up real fine as well.

pops pops ... I saw that aquarium co-op has ones specially to fit aquaclear filters, I was gonna pick one up but they were sold out. I've been thinking about that though, I know they can fit right through those slits in the intake tube. In a pinch i could wrap a fresh scrubby pad around it and zip-tie it I suppose

I guess i should turn off the water circulator as well before they are free swimming, that thing will suck them right up.

They are a good looking pair. His seam has thickened up some from when you got him.
Thank you, yeah i noticed he already looks a tad different from the CL pic. Hes roughly the same size as the female, and she is probably a little over a year old, so hopefully he has a lot of growing to do still.

Just go buy a replacement sponge for an AC50. Cut it in half, cut out a bit of sponge so the end fits in.1534208285538-95661227.jpg

Is it normal behavior for the female to be defensive towards the male as well? They seem to be getting rough and she is very defensive of that rock where her eggs are.

I'm wondering if it is because its just the two in there.

My female goes nuts every spawning. I’m considering moving her out as the male takes a beating and has some scars from the encounters. Once the eggs/fry disappeared things calm down for a couple weeks...then it all starts over again.

Since your female is so big she will be less trusting of the male, in my experience anyway.
My little female is less defensive and lets my male help care for the fry. She still puffs and shakes at him, but never hurts him or chases him off. My big female will only let the male spawn with her and then does everything she can to keep him away. She has been the one to cause damage to my male.

As for covering intakes, I just use some filter sponge and rubber bands. It’s been working great for me. Except with having a sump now I don’t know what to do to keep fry out. I currently have a handful or more living down there. Ugh.
