Am I going to be able to train them to eat pellets and freeze dried food?


And since I am in CA I can't keep one but..Can Spotted Gars be fed pellets and freeze dried food?

needlefish are very hard to get off of live food. some claim to have success w/ doing so, but i have yet to see proof.

even though you don't have one spotted/florida gar are very easy to get on prepared or frozen foods.

shrimp, floating pellets, fresh fish fillet, insects....the list could go on. for some reason mine tend to favor freeze dried krill, hikari cichlid gold floating pellets, and raw shrimp the most. they show less interest in raw fish... although they will readily eat it.

How long can needlenose and spotted gars live?

I believe female spotted gar can live up to 30 years in captivity but males do not get quite that old.

As for needlefish, I am uncertain, but know that these are not true gar.

The gar in demjor's avatar is a tropical gar.

i got a needlefish a few weeks ago and he would not eat anything but live the first week........ than i just tries frozen market shrimp and krill and now he eats it like crazy. you might have to starve him for a while though.

i almost got mine on pellets they will eat cichlid food sticks but only when there wet and are soft i'll try to post pics of mine gulping down something but i think any true gar would out grow a needlenose gar and would eat it spotted gars get around 3'-4'
