I think that releasing pirhana is illegal in most places.

I wonder why someone would be so irked as to why the release of piranhas is illegal. You have to note that piranhas are rather voracious predators and will easily decimate the local flora and fauna. Any foreign species without natural predators are a threat to the local ecosystem. Regardless of whether that fish is a predator or not, never even try to release the fish in the wild if you think the fish will ever die anyway. They have some means of reproducing a lot thus destroying the native ecosystem.

Whether a predator or not, releasing fish not native to an ecosystem is harmful. Check out this months issue of FAMA, which reviews the harm done to Florida's aquatic ecosystem by pleco species.

Thanks for putting this out there. Not a lot of people realize how important it is to keep natural evironment's just that NATURAL. Also, that sucks that they have banned snakeheads I used to own one and now......never again.:iagree:

I know that its called an environmental tragedy out there but DUDE,,,,thats a pretty *****in shopping list in your backyard. Beats out Crappie, Bass, bullhead, and Cottonmouths anyday!!! I once hooked an oscar while bassin and let me say..... Id rather catch 15'' oscars than LMBs anyday!!! But yet I gotta be responsible and agree with you posters, but I can still dream of hooking a huge RTC at my local fishn hole...

Our lake is being infested by Pacu tossed there by fishkeepers which were uninformed how big they get. Most LFS wont sell them here, there a special order fish..I believe most the fish released come from walmart and etc. I do alot of fishing and in the last 5 years i have cought 2 myself. Is it possible for them to survive our winters and breed in lake Erie. All i have seen in the newspaper and such were huge and most were called Pirana ,Hopefully there not breeding.

Spread the word, we all know that even tank kept natives should not be replanted into local waters due to the risk of introducing diseases. Many keepers have not even thought of this. Pass the word to all fish keepers, NEVER RELASE TANK KEPT FISH TO THE WILD! I seriously think we need to come up with little hand out cards (with maybe MFK logo and address) saying so and giving the reasons, including the current bans due to exotic introductions. I will pass this idea on to the admins and if they agree we should be able to get some MFK cards to hand out to LFS's for distribution.

I live in lake district in northern Poland. It's beatiful, wild land. Its harmony shouldn't be destroyed by other species.
