New Eheim 2262

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Or just buy a regular 1" x 3/4" reducer at your local home store.

I used two 3/4" PVC 90's connected with a short piece of pipe on the 2262.

On the other 2260, we bent the 3/4" PVC pipe into a J-tube by filling it with fine sand, heating with a heat gun & forming the J-shape around a can.

Does the strainer you link to come with a slip connection rather than male threads?

I thought of doing this , Do you cap both ends when you pack the sand ? Do you use a 3/4 inch ply-wood to get it over the rim and bend it down word? Will any heat gun due?
Do you wave the heat gun all around the area where the bend will be? I bet you get a better flow doing it this way than using 90 degree elbows.

Yes, I pack the pipe with sand & cap both ends. I used a 3" diameter empty cat food can as the form & screwed it down to the bench top.

I used a Wagner heat gun with dual settings of 600F or 1400F but I don't remember which heat setting I used. I found it easiest to keep the heat gun stationary & to rotate the pipe constantly a few inches away from the heat.

Once the PVC starts to become limp or droop a little bit, I form it around the can slowly so it doesn't kink. Once it has the proper shape, slip it off the can & dip it in room temperature water to cool it a bit. Empty the sand out and flush with water.

PLEASE USE heavy gloves when doing this as the pipe gets very hot and will burn you. I used heavy leather work gloves or welder's gloves.

I also left the pipe longer than needed to have a cooler section to handle then just cut off the excess to the length I needed.

There are a couple videos on youtube that show examples of bending PVC using this method that are helpful to watch.

Can you get a tight fit over the rim like you would with having two 1 inch 90 degrees elbows? I have a canopy with about 4 inch clearance
in the rear so can't use a big loop. Maybe use a 3/4 inch ply-wood an
loop it over it or a board with a "Bull Nose" {like what you use for stairs}
Wold like to get the 1 inch pvc loop close to the rim as possible with out any kinks if I can , maybe use a smaller can?
Do yo have a pic of yours to see how it sits on the tank?
Thanks

You jump right in with both feet buying the Eheim 2262. You go.

Inkslinger, you can get a tighter to the tank fit using fittings rather than bending the pipe. There is a minimum bend radius for various diameter pipes to avoid kinks or distortion.

Here are some pics of my DIY 3/4" J-tube as described in post #23.

The 3/4" pipe fits perfectly inside the Eheim 25/34mm intake hose. The clamp just secures it properly.

There is approx. 4" from center of pipe to center of pipe in the pic below.

Hope this helps.

I would think that you would get better flow with 1 complete curve than having 2
90 degree elbows . The elbows inside looks smaller 'hole' an would loose some kind
of flow. I would like to try a 1 inch even if I have to flatten the top just a little
like this |_| , but yours seem to sit right on the rim like I want . Will I guess I will have to buy a heat gun an some sand . You think using 2 elbows will be all right . I did find a
pvc bender
http://www.pvcbendit.com/
Is very costly , Maybe can make some money making intake/returns U tubes to local
aquarium clubs.

It's very easy to bend the PVC yourself as I described above. Even if you ruin the first couple of attempts at bending PVC, it would still be cheaper than buying a professional tool to do it.

I was a little nervous when I did my first one but was extremely surprised how easy it was to do. I never measured the difference in flow between using 90 degree fittings and the DIY J-tube but I am satisfied with the J-tube.

Will I wimp out an place my order for the Eheim pressure gray return with a couple of
extension for the 16/22 going to try to get 45inches length , Now my project for the intake I do like your J tube Deeda.
I was at a LFS and saw a clear 1 inch U tube {ones use for wet-dry} and was wondering
if I could glue on pvc connection to it?

I don't know what material the clear 1" U-tube from LFS is made of. I thought they were acrylic.
