New project, will take a long time

Might have to resort to putting the pond vac to work for the,
"after winter / Spring cleaning".

Once you got all the crud out then the filter system can go about it's normal business...remember we are trying to have it catch-up with a winters full of debris and dirt and leaves and all things organic that has made the unfiltered water home for the winter...

See about renting or getting a deal on one of these...

I hear you Bro, Believe it or not I've ran my large landing net across the bottom and there was nothing there even to the point where it picked up the dollop of cement that fell in laying the flags, but nothing else. We are talking about a pure dissolved winter when nothing was running, I was chatting to the wife yesterday and if we'd have had one more week of good weather the system could have run all winter, annoying but once again life decides to vomit all over my shoes;) Not to mention the ton upon ton for frog spawn that still is appearing from nowhere.

When we stripped the filters down on Sunday we pressure washed the jap matting and it wasn't pleasant what came out so it is working, just playing catch up.

Today the water looks much better, I've not measured it but it's certainly getting there. Plus I've been sat by the pond this afternoon, glorious weather. That big white ghost is a feeding machine, we've dug up some small cichlid pellets that were lying around as the Koi pellets are a bit to big for the small ones and that fish goes mad for them. The long fin koi as well seems to enjoy them as do the babies.

If I can waste a couple of hours in the sun watching the fish, beer in hand we've got to be getting somewhere;)

I'm still enjoying it along the way, relaying and re-leveling the flags I'm not looking forward to and I won't enjoy that.

The cheese wedge idea turned into a bad one, not the idea but in practice it won't work so I need a new plan.

I keep looking everyday and trying to work out if the pond is clearing. Today almost all of the green tint has gone, literally overnight. The water looks black, due to the liner being black I'm taking this as a good sign.

The fish are still feeding well, I read on another website yesterday about ghosts and it said you should always buy smaller fish than what's in the pond as larger ones take over and become dominant. So true with that white ghost, it's an animal at feeding time:D

you should post a video of feeding time that would be interesting. I was just talking to a guy today who was having some pond issues and lost all his koi over the winter. I showed him yours and he really liked it he went from going to drain the pond to removing the pond to make it alot bigger and deeper. his is presently 3ft deep now its gonna be 8ft deep that will help in being able to weather the winter. you have helped alot of people with this thread.

8 foot would be good, as long as there is a hole for gas exchange when it freezes it should be fine.

I'll see what I can do on the feeding video. The problem I've got is I can only use the little point and shoot and they are somewhat skittish when I'm nearby.

well he spent an hour with me on here and he learned alot I imagine he will be joining soon. another MFKer? all thanks to you
He needs to read the thread from the start, that'll keep him busy;)

Don't forget, this is how I built my pond, there are many other ways to construct a koi pond and filter it, and I've read about them all:)

I know I got a way OTT UV but I've got to ask, is this normal:
