The hatchetfish will add silver flashes as well, or you could go with something larger, like congo tetras or diamond tetras. They'd be less likely to get eaten by some of the larger fish in the pond.

The hatchetfish will stay more near the surface though, and ought to form slightly tighter schools, I'd think.

A huge school of neons would be incredible though.

no pbass? That would be the coolest!!
They'd be cool, but they'd be the only thing in there, and its not a monster FISH pond, its a monster POND with fish.

Plus, there's something nice about seeing a whole bunch of small fish schooling around without being chased by a large predator.

I'll try to get some better photos of the african cichlids later, but here's what I have. They don't sit still for very long.

Nice! I bet all the flashes of color really look nice in that clear water...

how do they react when you go swimming? Do they pretty much stay at the other end of the pond, or are they accustomed to you being in the water yet?

As we vacuum the pool there are certain species that swim around the vacuum head. When we splash around they pretty much disappear. I did have some that would nibble on your legs but it was freaking my wife out so I took them out.
