Tuggered, I'd like to congratulate you on building the most amazing pool/pond and yard ever. EVER!! Read ALL 98 pages through the day (at work getting paid by the hour of course!) What a journey, keep up the great work :)

Wow I just read this untire thread in a couple hours (i know, i have no life) and i am just blown away by what you have accomplished and that is my dream once I move some where in a similar climate. As far as the algae problems there are several small (under 6'') that could dramatically reduce the growth of hair or other types that cling to the sides. first of all I would recommend bristle nose plecos. they stay small and dont eat plants like other plecos will. Also Tropheus cichlids which in nature eat mostly hair algae and come in a wide assortment of colors and species. finally I would also recommend convict cichlids. they dont eat algae persay but they are a great little cichlid with a lot of personality, they breed like rabbits, and the males show a ton of color and interesting behavior.

Remember, the OP lives in Costa Rica and many of the commonly availiable fish in the States are much harder to find there.
