Hi,

So I'm guessing everyone has head about these fantastic new filters from Ocean Free, called the Hydra.

They claim to be able to do a single stage depuration going from anything including ammonia, nitrite, NITRATES, and Phosphates, see image below:

Using "Hydro-Pure Technology" which I thought only existed for swimming pools....

So I got a Hydra 40,it is rated for 200-500l tanks....my tank is 320l so it should easily do the job.

For the purpose of this test I want to test specifically the Nitrate removal, so I have put it into a system I purposely haven't water changed, but with a fully functional canister, Eheim 2262 that is fully seeded.

And my starting parameters when i added the Hydra are:

I'll take readings every 24 hours and lest see how this supposed "Single Stage Depuration" works!

(Also....if it doesn't work I can't use this log to get my money back!!!)

Oh yeah tank stock:

25cm FH
13cm Synspilum
Synodontis Petricola 6cm
Synodontis Decorus 10cm
Gold Spot Plec 15cm

Sub'd interested in the outcome. Does it have media ? How does it do what it claims it does ?

Yes is has propriety media called Cata-Pure.

I'm not sure of the exact mechanism, but has something to do with passing small electric current through titanium and carbon fiber to created hydroxil ions that react to deactivate the toxins

After 12 hours my water is like glass!!! Can easily see through the length of the tank and out the other side with no tint from wood tanins.

Nitrates dropped from 80ppm to 40ppm:

Quite interesting.
I'm not sure about the electric current. It can't make the nitrogen and phosphorus disappear, by simple rule of mass balance. Even if it creates OH-. Let's hope it doesn't. Your pH would rise like crazy.
I think your initial effects that you observed (decoloration of water, reduction in nitrates) can be explained with adsorption of tannins on the carbon and the secret medium which likely is an anion exchange resin.

Does the manufacturer say anything how often you need to replace the media?

Thanks for trying it out and posting. Please keep us posted.

Carbon? There is no carbon. I have added no media to the system other than a Hydra and the Cata-Pure Cartridge required to make it work.

Also the media requires replacement every 12 months... With a wash out every 3 (run and agitation under tap water....doesn't hold traditional bacteria at all... Electric current kills it)

To answer your question of how, see below... That's all I got...other than the patent number which I have checked and it is completely valid from what I can see!!!

They don't divulge the chemistry of the media or reaction. If you search hydroxy pure swimming pool technology, this is the closest I can find that does the same thing. They both release "Hydro-Pure Water" which according to my knowledge is synthesized chemically perfect H2O....

Again I'm not defending or bashing out the Hydra....or the media....I just want to see what it does.

Also we both know nitrates are not adsorbed by carbon!!
