Official Off Topic Discussion Thread #1

Hello; I have been watching college football this year. Sometime I watch replays of conference games from far away places. I saw a game the other night and one of the teams were called Cardinals. I am familiar with the Louisville Cardinals and the Cardinals baseball team.

For no good reason I began to wonder why teams are called the Cardinals and I cannot think of any other songbird names used by sports teams. So am I wrong about that? Are their sports teams named after other songbirds?

Also why would so many teams be named after a Cardinal? Since the cardinal is the state bird of KY it made some sense to me that a KY team might use the name.
