OMG, the "LFS" is using mollies to test saltwater!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
why oh why would someone wont spend the 10$ for a hydrometer to test salinity i do not know......

I didn't argue that mollies couldn't live in sw... they can. I'm saying that wht they're doing has nothing to with what @red belly pacu is trying to educate us about

These weren't acclimated; just thrown right in. Into a tank of unknown salinity.

Okay I see. But some people just dump the mollies in without any type of acclimation from what I read in the forums and they did fine in a saltwater tank. It was irresponsible, yes but you know not everyone follow the rules. But that is another subject.

But yea, okay, I see where you are coming from with unknown salinity in the tank. You are right.

from movie Forrest Gump : "Stupid is, stupid does".:irked: Maybe ignorance is bliss, but only for the idiot. The rest of us really get up set when something suffers needlessly. Especially when it's something that has no choice, and is the hands of someone like that person at your lfs. Hopefully a light bulb will turn on in their head, and they start treating things more humainly.:)

Yea, the OP is right and you are right.

I learn something new everyday. Mollies can live in 100 percent freshwater and 100 percent saltwater. What a fish! I knew mollies could take some salt but did not know that it could be 100 percent.

I've seen them seemingy do quite well in full salt, but I think the lesson here is that some fish stores will do just about anything, as long as the bottom line means a profit is being made. And the unfortunate thing is some people in certain areas really have little alternatives about where they can go for fish supplies when it's just more convenient to go to the store down the road. I understand a person can get just about anything shipped, but sometimes you just need something right away (like when your heater takes a crap in the middle of winter).
I'm fortunate enough to live in a major American city with some great LFSs, but I really feel for you guys that aren't in the same boat. Maybe it's time to move, or open up your own shop! :)

There isn't really much you can do about that. It's their fishes, their business.
Just close your eyes and pretend you've never been into that shop.
This is the sad side of the hobby.

Wouldn't they have to have permits to have the animals and fish in the store? find out who regulates that and make a report. At least with the bird they might be able to force them to treat them better.

7 yr old macaw isn't even mature yet.. so why they told you that BS is beyond me.. likely the bird is fed a poor diet and rarely offered a bath, or other standard husbandry needs. The experiances you had with your bird would have been enough for me to never walk inot the store again. a LFS thats to cheap to purchase a hydrometere let alone a refractometer doesn't give a tinkers damn about their livestock at all, and should just be avoided. they lose customers.. they lose business.. they don't stay around very long.
