Oscar, JD, and ??? upcoming 90 gallon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Would the Carpintis be ok with a GT? I don't much about the carpintis.
In a really large tank it can, but in a 90 you are limited to one big species. I think you’d see similar issues as with a jd with the two fighting.

I'm really wanting something in the blue-green family maybe more green that gets 6 to 8 inch and I'd like to keep a couple. Carpintis are beautifulbut may be a bit too big for my tank.

Thats def the size of a grown carpintis....they get a greenish blue. The 90 I had was 3ft long which I'm finding even a 4ft long isn't enough room unless as deadeye stated you just go with one. It won't take long for it to get full grown and he'll dominate the tank, likely killing anything else in it. The Carpintis is not unlike the Texas Cichlid. Do a Google search and you'll get a better idea what they look like.

Take a look at Andinoacara Pulcher. Looks are very similar to GT's just on a smaller scale. They are cousins as both are Andinoacara.
I would get 6 to 8 fry and grow them out to get a pair in the end. Add a nice sized school of tall bodied Tetra like Buenos Aires, Bleeding Hearts, Black skirts etc. Finally add in a group of 6 Pimelodus Pictus or a group of 10 Cory cats.
With this setup your tank should stay pretty busy with Tetras and the cats always on the move. You shouldn't get overwhelmed with fry as the catfish should consume them before any substantial size is acquired.

I recommend you get a Green Terror and a Cichlasoma Nicaraguense. They go well together and the adults are very colorful.

Above is a half grown H.carpintus, below same individual at about twice that size.
At full adult size I doubt (even taking into account varying personality traits) it would share the available territory in a 90gal, with any other similar looking blue spangled cichlid (such as a GT). Most similar colored cichlids consider other similar colored cichlids as competitors to be dealt with, with extreme prejudice.
And an adult male carpintus could easily tear an adult G.T. to bits.
