Oscar, JD, and ??? upcoming 90 gallon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for all the input. Still a couple weeks until tank is in then cyclingso time to think. I had a couple Sevs before and really enjoyed them but trying something new. I like the idea of maybe a solo jd or Gt with some female convicts abs some cats on the bottom. I loved my Raphael too but would go weeks without seeing him. Are Gts ok with convicts and some dither fish or should i stick to the JD? And are loaches out?

I'll leave others to comment on the cichlids as I've never kept any kind of cichlid and don't know an awful lot.

Hey guys, planning my new 90g fw tank I'll be getting in the next couple weeks. Been out of fishkeeping for a year and excited to get it up and running. I'm thinking I want an Oscar and Jack Dempsey, I've read they can be good tankmates, but wondering how many fish I can stock. I'm looking at the fluval fx4 and sand substrate. Could i do an Oscar, JD, a couple clown loaches and a few tinfoil barbs or what that be way overstocked? Biggest fish I had before was a couple severums in a community 60, so just figuring out where to go with this tank, I'd like more than 2 fish but don't want to be rehoming fish or returning them. Thanks for any advice or information guys.
Welcome aboard

I have a trio of GTs growing out, about 4”each and looks to be 2m:1f. They are in a tank filled with water sprite, several long cuttings(~8’) of pothos, and hornwort. There are also 9 blue botia, 6 boesmani rainbows, 8 Dawkinsia tambraparniei and 2) 3” ornate pims. Everyone started around the same size I haven’t had any losses and only conspecific aggression

I have a female green terror about 7 inches and a male jack slightly smaller in my classroom 90. Buenos Aires tetras for dithers and bristle nosed plecos with Malaysian trumpet snails. Tank is quite calm

Sounds awesome, thanks everyone, going to have a chat why the lfs and sleep on it but feeling like I've got an idea where i want to take it now

Are you planning to upgrade again, to at least double that size of a tank?

If not, then hard no. A 90 gal is not large enough for an adult oscar, even kept by itself.

If the 90 is the long term or end plan, then stay away from Oscars completely. You could get away with a JD and some smaller tank mates.
But in your 135 gallons work Cutteri, Midas and Texas together? :D

No won't be upgrading, 90g is max for the space we have. Just looking for something bigger than the typical community fish. I've read several places that 75 is big enough for an oscar and they sound like fun fish personality wise. But if a 90 is too small I'm not hung up on an Oscar, that's why I'm doing the research. Also thought about peacocks/ haps but seems t be a lot of trial fish and rehoming involved from what I can find in forums. If I went with a JD pair what else could go with them?
Nicaragua Cichlid
Firemouth
Cuban
Green Terror
Its cichlids about 20-25 cm and you can go with one pair of this sp, with JD, if you want just Central America
If you go with South American you can put somthing of
Acaras sp.
Severum sp. (pair)
Geophagus sp.
Balzanii is nice
and what you want of Dwarf.

Why do you say absolutely, do you mean the clowns due to their size or all loaches? I had several yoyo and striata in with my severums for years with no issue. And didn't you say you've never kept cichlids?
