I have a 55 gallon tank and two Pacu's. Both are growing like weeds and each are about 5-6 inches. Can I keep these fish in my tank long term or will they outgrow the 55 gallon tank? Andrew:)

you can't keep them in the 55g long term, they're going to eventually get over 2' long each and need a pretty substantial sized tank(over 300g)

they will out grow you tank very fast i would start looking for a new tank quick red belly pacu don't gert as big as blacks but both fish will get 3 feet long and very wide they will grow untill they can't turn around in your tank and then break the tank wall from stress or you won't be able to keep the water clean enough

an adult pacu wouldn't even fit in a 55 so yes you will need a MUCH bigger tank then a 55 you would need a pond or several hundred gallon tank to keep them for life

i really hate petsmart and other pet stores that sell these fish they shouldn't be able too. nobody told you how big these fish get when you bought them did they some stores just don't care about fish

Welcome to MFK apscott.
What previous posters have said is the absolute truth, Pacus require HUGE tanks to thrive properly. If you do some research you will learn some startling facts. I am guessing you pic these guys up at Wal-Mart or Petsmart or Petco, and the sign said they require a 50 gallon tank. Unfortunately this is a gross understatement. They will continue to grow. and grow...

I hate

Insted of having Pacu's, keep Silver Dollars. They stay smaller and look the same. And yes, will fit in your 55G.

thanks for the input. I have a brand new 75 gallon tank that I'm in the process of seasoning ,but I really didn't want to use this tank for the Pacu. From the posts, 75 gallon isn't enough either to hold the Pacu. Which brings me to my second question, and regretably, I think I know the answer, but can my new 75 gallon tank sustain, long term, two payara. Andrew

the 75g won't hold the payara either, you're looking at an almost 4' fish. you should get a couple of large indoor ponds, then you could house the pacus and payara(not in the same pond though)

I'd say....try to find a new home for the pacu before they get too big, then you'll find no-body will take them. There is always an option, of course....more and bigger tanks!!!
