My tank is in my basement, why I dont have pothos or anyother plants ontop of my tank is because all the lights except the tank leds are off allday, they would never grow. I am starting to plant java fern and amazon sword in my tank, the fern on rocks and wood and the sword in the gravel. So both the water and the gravel is being cleaned by my plants. I think not alot of people have planted tanks is because their monsters tear them up !!

I have aros (top swimmers) and piranhas both will leave plants on the bottom of the tank alone ! Im just begining to experiment now tho !
Pothos will still grow fine and reduce you n03!

Finished building this 240gal tank (4x4) few days ago, just finished this 40gallon plant holder. Finally got ahold of a big peace lilly. How it looks right now. Im hoping in a day or so having this puppy up and running so the fish got some nice clean water to play in. I dont know if I am up to washing a billion bags of lava rock though :(

you know what p's me off? That stupid pothos thread is stickied. COME ON this 62 page thread is 1,000 times better than that one.

p.s. ill try bio balls instead of lava rocks. ALOT lighter and easier to move. Ordered 1200, have prob 300 in the garage so 1500 bio balls here we come!

OK i got my 175watt MH running. Only 47 more watts over my quad t-8's. This thing bloooows them out of the water. Its amazing and really is like the sun is next to me. Question though, how high should this be above the plants? Right now its about 24". Hoping I would ask before I run into a oops all dead!

Temp hanging. Ignore everything its all ghetto rigged until this weekend when I can actually plant them. "Some" plants are just sitting in the water to atleast get some filtration happening.

no therm, but from taking my hand from the room and putting it on top of the plants cant be more than a 3° difference. For the lighting I wanted LED would be $$$$$. This MH fixture was $100 I beleive and the bulb was $12 from a hydroponics store, think I payed 140 shipped. LED couldnt touch that for the price.
