With Festae in the tank would I need Ferts? I know they make nitrates. Their food has phosphates right? or potassium? sorry I don't know much about ferts. Will the plants in riparium need any addition additives to grow?
I just have my plants for filtration, so I don't dose anything. If you really wanted the plants to take off I guess you could fertilize, but for my purpose it's not necessary.
Once you start feeding your plants, you're not a fishkeeper, you're a planted tank enthusiast. The whole point (for me at least) of using plants is to reduce toxins in the water between water changes. Adding toxins to make the plants happy defeats the purpose. Let your plants be hungry!
although I have the same opinion as knifegill, you got me thinking about adding phosphates/trace elements for the plants. The fish would be putting off all the nitrates your plants will use, but do we have to worry about trace elements/phosphates for these plants? Mine are absolutely fine, but if I already had some leftover KH2P04, and some trace elements should I be considering dosing for these plants, or is it not even worth it? I'm only using them for a filter, but I'd prefer the least amount of decaying plant matter in my tank as possible.
Back here in Puerto Rico they sprout all the time when you just throw them on top of compost that's kept mildly humid.
The only thing you really need to add for nutes is potassium. I used KCl which can be found in any grocery store under the name No Salt or Morten salt substitute. I use around 1/4 teaspoon for each 50 gallon every water change. Which will give you around 22 ppm of K in the water. Since testing for potassium is difficult and inaccurate I only dose after the water change. Trace minerals may help but I don't use them and I have been growing terrestrial plants in my aquariums for a very long time.
Ive read phosphates will get into your water anyways to feed plants because it is in a lot of commercial fish food. Is this true?
Thanks for the info about potassium. I might consider it since it is so cheap. is potassium bad for fish? if it is i wont use it. How do I know if my tap already has potassium? we have pretty bad water...lol
