Is your Endli eyeless? If it is eyeless(blind) then that could explain why its dark. ;)

Hao, you are totally right.
That's what we go along with here in Japan too.
Blind Bichirs (even sometimes just damaged eyed) will often turn very dark almost black.

A lot of bichirs are sold here almost black, blind, and labelled as "Super Black".

Kept over black color substrate, bichirs will darken up quite a bit.
 
I had a very horrible thought go through my head just now as I was reading Hao's question, I hope people don't start making their bichirs blind on purpose to get them to look this way.:(
