That's what we go along with here in Japan too.
Blind Bichirs (even sometimes just damaged eyed) will often turn very dark almost black.

A lot of bichirs are sold here almost black, blind, and labelled as "Super Black".

Sad to hear that this is commonly sold in certain areas. I guess when the hobby is as big as it is in some countries, the need for something new and unusual puts a lot of pressure on the fish farms.
