Pond dechlorinator in my aquarium

I am wondering if i can use pond dechlorinator in my tank instead of the usual tetra aquasafe as the pond dechlor is much cheaper and goes much further than the aquarium stuff. I couldnt find a difference from looking through dechlor descriptions online so i emailed a company about it and they sent this back:

Hi,
Just to let you know the manufactuers have advised me it is safe to use in an aquarium and will do the job but they wouldn't recommend long term use. The reason for this is that the aquarium products have extra buffers and salts that are not needed in ponds.

does anyone have any experience with pond dechlor in an aquarium with CA cichlids/general freshwater tropicals?
im nearly out and need to buy some dechlor soon so a speedy answer would be appreciated.

I dont see any problem. most of the "salts" and "buffers" added to these products are simply to jack up the price or convince you to buy their product over someone elses.

If you are keeping fish that require a special balance of salts or special buffering you would likely be doing that seperatly from your dechlorination anyway. In fact you would likely be using reconstituted RO and not need dechlorinator at all.

In the end dechlorinator is dechlorinator. I use prime because it is cheap considering how far it goes. one capfull dechlorinates 50g.

thats what i thought, only special needs fish would require extra stuff in their water and then it would be RO water getting buffered if they were that needy. any "extras" would likely be in the tap water, not the aquasafe, i use anyway wouldnt it?

I've been using the Pond-stuff for as long as I got my big tank.
My LFS told me theres no difference except the dosage.
My fish are all doing very great.
My wife accidentally brought a bottle of the aquarium-dechlor and they charge the same price for a 2000L bottle as for a 12000L pond-bottle!
However, my personal fish-dealer brought my attention to the canisters he has.
They contain 5 Liter of the aquarium-dechlor and will last me a year.
Relatively speaking this is cheaper than the other bottles!!!

your fine using pond dechlor in your tank. Others have done it before.

Typically any dechlor is fine. If anything, you would want to reduce the number of external buffers and salts that are added to your tank so you have finer control and fewer chances of incompatibility.

Good question I was wondering this lately. I might switch over but I am attached to prime I have been using it since it was in that brown bottle with the white label lol.

well i just searched prime on ebay and it turns out a 500ml bottle of pond dechlor does 2500g and a 500ml bottle of prime does 5000g and I found i can get prime here no bother so im gonna switch to prime. more bang for your buck.
ive been wondering about a lot of pond equipment lately on my trawls through ebay.
