Well I think i found your killer, sounds like Ammonia poisoning, not sure if it was mentioned already but with the symptoms sounds just like it.

Melafix is known to kill your biological filter which converts Ammonia>Nitrite>Nitrate(which is harmless under 40ppm), Once you used it you killed it off and ammonia sky rocketed, gasping was because Ammonia burns the gills when a fish inhales so it tries to get some oxygen through its mouth.

I could be wrong though not sure if you treated it with Melafix in a quarantine or the main tank.

That doesn't explain why the more sensitive fish were perfectly fine or why blood was coming out of it's anus.
I've never had or heard of melafix killing biological filtration. I've used a fair amount of it and have never had an issue other than this time.

i think because the prawns were frozen they coulndt crush the shell when the ate it.

They weren't frozen when I fed them to the fish.

i dont feed shrimp/prawn with the shell heads on

i just buy the cheap frozen peeled prawns from the supermaket they are cheap $4 per bag 1 bag lasts 2 weeks

i dont even defrost them brake them up frozen (they are easyer to brake frozen ) then just throw them in my tank is kept a 86 so the dont stay frozen for more then a few secs

they also sink slower when frozen meaning they stay in the mid water longer which means the aro wont need to come down for the food as much

been feeding this way for more than 10yrs never done any harm to the fish tiger/dat,aros,tigrinus and polys

May we revisit this to answer a simple question, if params are good across the board, then Melafix properly used and doses, no charcoal, 1/2 dose for sensitive fish, this ONLY would happen in the Ammonia was high to start with? The Ammonia spike wouldn't occur in ideal circumstances (or normal circumstances?)

Or are you saying Melafix always spikes Ammonia, I've never had a problem with it, my fish love it, I've never used Pimafix (SP?) So this is a hypothetical only if Ammonia as high, not a normal worry, correct????

Please clarify if I misunderstood this, not questioning anyone's knowledge, just learning the most I can for the welfare of my fishy pals....
Thanks.....and welcome if you're a new member with just 2 posts.

I still see the hard food dangers, now I know that's how I lost by little baby, his first cricket, BAM, it was big, he was 3" and the cricket was supposed to be a baby, but it is so simple sometimes the obvious stares us in the face for a long time before we finally realize it. Rallysman, I always have and always will respect your input-
Peace out, and Thanks Mei

What i was saying was that Mexlafix along with any other meds are known to kill or damage your bio filtration either by killing off the bacteria or clogging the holes in which they live, with not enough bacteria the ammonia would spike.

As the guy said it appears this was not a problem because it did not affect his other fish. My other theory would be that the MP he was feeding had spoiled protein from being frozen which could have caused an upset stomach. These are just guesses though.

btw yes i am new to the forum, great forum :)

I have dosed with both Melafix and pimafix per the instruction for seven days and never seen a rise in either ammonia or nitrite levels. Neither mela nor pima have an effect on the bio filter system.

It is highly unlikely the arowana died from an upset stomach. Please read the entire thread. the cause of death has most likely already been identified.

Wow that was a beautiful aro, I had a 14 incher, had it since it was 2 inches, left the top off one night when I was cleaning tank, THUS DEAD ARO! :( Im sorry for your loss. Beautiful fish it is.

Thank you for the info and insight. My respects to your loss....
