edited my post to add more info

hard to say with watts alone. what type of lighting? how high will they be off the tank? take a look at my other sticky in the planted section, on lighting. this will tell you exactly what category of lighting you'll be in, depending on the distance of the lights to the bottom of the tank

I just want to give up on the whole planted set up...
I would be in the high lighting section with 20" from the bottom...
But I don't exactly want high, I just want to grow some swords and anubias.

give up before you even started?!?!? lol :nilly:

if you dont want high light, then you shouldnt be using T5HO bulbs. these bulbs are very intense, and shouldnt be used unless your doing co2 and a fert routine. stick with normal output bulbs, or raise your lights until youre considered low light

I took the 54w 67k "colormax" bulb out, so now I just have a 54w 10,000k daylight bulb.

So now I have 2 54w bulbs laying around :nilly:

So is that good? It still looks fairly bright, maybe a little better with just one. So is that considered medium?

So just one 54w T5HO bulb? how far will it be from the bottom of the tank/top of substrate?

yes just one.
and the tank is 20", and 2" substrate +2" with light stand, sooo 20"

Ok, yeah one bulb 20" from the substrate gives you 60 micromols of PAR, right in the middle of the medium light category (assuming the bulb spans the whole length of the tank).

if you get algae problems, just raise the light off the tank a few inches. since youre only using one bulb, having it raised a few inches is ideal to give you coverage over the whole tank.
