PURINA AQUAMAX

Most farm feeds of this quality will have a 40-60% inclusion rate of lower cost grains/starch. Not as "fillers", but as a cheap source of energy.

Carbohydrates are not a problem when used at lower inclusion rates, and most species of fish have the enzymes to break them down & utilize them as an energy source, but not at excessive levels such as what's found in these types of farm feeds.

Kibbles & Bits is cheap too, but I wouldn't feed that to my dogs, anymore than I would feed Purina to my fish.

In one brand, Purnia Mills caters to the Tilapia cichlid.

Also, I bought my Aquamax that caters to the large mouth bass type of fish.

Only in some marketers mind, do they cater to any species of fish.

All food for animals needs to be checked not for what the protein values etc say, but the fillers and carb contents. I feed my dogs food that has no wheat or corn products. Why? Because dogs aren't made to digest those sorts of foods. Fish are the same way. Just because the crude is 43% doesn't mean it's GOOD crude. I understand trying to offset the cost of food, but I don't mind spending a little more making sure they're getting a food that is going to nurture them.

For instance, I pay about $200/month in dog food for 2 dogs. If I were to cut costs and go with Purina or Kibbles n Bits, my dogs digestive systems would be torn apart, their coats would look ragged and they'd be more prone to disease. (I have 2 German Shepherd dogs who work the field)

For my fish, I stick with NLS because the fish seem to be happier, more active and more colorful on this food. So even though a low cost bulk food is out there, I'm not going to take a chance on having my stock potentially ruined by it.

well so far Im still quite happy with my purchase. My fish are still healthy and growing and my water quality has not suffered. I should point out that I am not feeding them exclusively the aquamax. I regularly feed them a variety of other foods as well so I am confident that they are getting good nutrition. I agree that there are probably better quality foods or more nutritious pellets out there but we all have budgets to work with. If im eating top ramen theyre not having filet mignon. ;)
oh and BTW if anyone would like to try some then zap me a message. Id be glad to send you a 1lb bag to try out if you can cover postage. Id like to see other peoples experiences with it and I havent put a dent in my supply yet.

I just purchased a 50 pound bag of aquamax 600 from the local farm supply for 15.00...they ordered it in a year ago and the customer never picked it up. It is a floating pellet, and the shelf life is 12 months, but since the feed store kept it in an unheated warehouse, it has been stored below freezing for most of the last five months. I am going to try running it through the magic bullet to reduce the size for my smaller fish.
Here is info including ingredients:

Purina Mills Aquamax Grower 600 50-lb Bag
Product Description: Aqua Max Fish Diet is a floating feed Complete for Catfish, Tilapia, Trout, Hyrid Striped Bass Yellow Perch and Red Drum.

Ingredients: Fish Meal, Soybean Meal, Ground Corn, Poultry Meal, Fish Oil, Wheat Middlings, Hydrolyzed Poultry Feathers, Corn Gluten Meal, Blood Meal, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Menadione Dimethyl pyrimidinol Bisulfate, Choline Chloride, Calcium Pantothenate, L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphoshate (source of Vitamin C), Thiiamin MOnonitrate, Biotin, Folic Acid, Cholecalciferol, Riboflavin, nicotinic Acid, Di-Alpha Tocopheryl Acertate, Vitamin A Acetate, Ethoxyquin (A Preservative), Zinc Oxide, Cyanocobalamin, Dl-Motioning, Manganous Oxide, Ferrous Carbonate, Copper Sulfate, Zinc Slufate, Calcium Iodate, Calcium Carbonate, Cabalt Carbonate.

I must admit the hydrolyzed poultry feathers makes me shake my head..but they feed this to game fish and the local trout farm feeds it so I guess it must be safe.

I used this food for about a year or so, and I'm giving up...I only used it for the sake of saving money, but going to back to NLS like before

My Tigershovelnose Catfish is packing some size eating the purina aquamax large mouth feed.

You ended up keeping the food, no buyers for it?

Glad your fish decided to eat it.

May I ask why you are giving up? Did your fish not like it? They did not thrive?
I don't want to harm my fish.
