REACTORS- Filtration for stingrays

Well, after a couple of trials, and an overflow accident, i resolved the traffic jam issues. Media is now constantly on the run, boiling.

I shoild point out that i reduces the media to 3/4 of the initial gallonnage i bought, and will add the rest slowly.

This was pointed out by Dyodysis and it improoves the effectiveness of the reactor.

you will find the amout of media you end up with will be a waste of time and the sump space can be better used with other media

which is why i said its best to try running the reactor as a stand alone unit

just out of interest what media did you remove to make room

Wow. I was kinda given credit for all my work and reseach time. I will have to add some pics of what I am doing right now for my setup, now much is boiling ( tons of flow through sump, not ebough air at all) but I knew it was going to take me a week or so to figure out what I wanted to do and maybe order a larger air pump. Glad you shared your info . And T1 I didn't need to remove anything from my sump to add this setup into it. Pure added upgrade DIY fun!!!

Richard, i have posted pix in here and explained that i did a reactor in an old cube tank, linked to the sump...water is pumped from the sump and fall by gravity back into the sumps last chamber.

I get better results, after a week, with immersed water pumps, strong ones than with airstones.

I think i know why. The luftpumps i have are fishroom pumps. They do a noise like a diesel fishing boat.

This tank is my living room. So the option for a silnet airpump is a must, and silnet airpumps do not work...the stones barely bubble......

If you would please start your own thread on the best media and sump setup for a ray tank. Ill read it and even some of your favorite friends on here will come comment about it. This is talking about reactors and trying them out and experience with them more covering the plastic wheel type stuff that reminds my wife of pasta. Lol You made your opinion know to us all thanks now go start your thread and ill look for it.

People have stated how good the ox levels are but I still have not seen any redox levels

If the reactor is so good why don't you all rip out you other filtration and replace it with bead filters as they are the same as a reactor

Question. Has anyone tried a barrel INSIDE the 55 gal barrel? Keeping the k1 in the inner barrel to boil and having the waste drain from the outer barrel. This would give u more water and a little less media.
I was thinking of doing this and c how it works
What do u think?

Stop posting in this thread just trying to stir things up by making broad statements misleading people. It is not helpful and your making it harder for people to find good information by instigating arguments and jumping off topic comparing totally different filtration components. We all know how you post which is fine, just please stop posting in this thread and start your own as you were asked to do so previously.

T1KARIMAN is incorrect a reactor is not at all like a bead filter.

A reactor is an open container with buoyant to neutrally buoyant media that is driven by a high output air pump saturating the media with oxygen aiding bacteria growth.

A true bead filter is a pressurized vessel that is filled with floating poly circular shaped beads. Water flows into the pressurized container via multiport valve or side mounted valve out slotted laterals in the bottom. Water is pushed up through the beads and packs them together catching debris and mechanically filtering fines. The filter can be backwashed and uses a blower to dislodge the waste from the bead pack allowing you to flush it from the system.

Now what you are incorrectly referring to as a bead filter im assuming is a pressurized filter like the ultima II filter that is filled with tubular media (something like bioflow 9). Similar to a bead filter but the media does not trap fines as well as a true bead and it is usually run in downflow mode within the pressurized container.

No air is used inside the pressurized vessel. Bead filters or pressure filters like the ultima are not the same as a moving bed bio reactor. The one similarity is the ultima uses a sinking tubular media similar to those used in bio reactors.

I really like building the fliidized bed filters. To me they seem like the best way to go. Why ? 100% of the media is in contact with the water to be treated 100% of the time.

Here are 2 more I have built they are not K-1 flavored but work well for what they were designed to do.

Thanks allot, nice to see another in sump setup, I have the same thing with all the media going to one end of my sump, I will be getting a large air pump to take care of that though and hope no other problems will be found after that gets going well.
