Is anyone else running these on their tanks?

I have a Rena Smart Heater in the 200W variant that if the weather changes (garage tank) it might dip just below the 5* set point of the heater and will start flashing, once this happens it STOPS heating altogether?!

If the weather gets cold, (it is 40* ambient, but the tanks are definately insulated) my 'cold water tank' (72*) dips to 70* then crashes, I caught it at 62* and added a 150watt to get it back in the range I'm after, but damn, if it gets too low it turns off?! That seems backwards to me!:irked:

i have a 300 watt smart heater and mine does not have that problem..ive had it for about 6 months..thats strange that it is doing that

I've also got the 300 watt version. No problems.

Any chance either of your setups are in the garage and not indoors? I think that the +/- 5* feature of the unit is what's up. If the temp varies above or below the set temp, the LED flashes, as soon as it flashes it stops heating...safety or not, I would think that it should shut down if it gets too hot, not too cold... Maybe an email to Rena is in order.

I had to turn down my heater again due to cold weather tonight, so it would start heating again. That little supplemental heater is surely getting a workout!

Thanks for the input!

sounds like to me the heater may not be working rt and starting to fail. Id replace it. I know they are not cheap, but its not worth the bigger issue of your not being there and something happening to your stock. Id also upgrade to a 300w. Ive had alot of luck with mine and seems others on here have also. But see what rena says first.. Might just need a reset or something..

It's not a huge/deadly issue, as it is a native tank. But these past few days have been hard on the heater(s) in all my tanks(40* ambient in the garage last night). It is under rated for the size tank, but it is frustrating when it just shuts off and the temps drop so rapidly-cold temps are OK for the fish in the tank, but quick drops probably not so good.

My other tanks have standard glass heaters and when it isn't as cold, I can see that they turn off and on(cycling)-this being in tanks that are set -and holding- at the winter 75*.

ive gota a question. is there anyway to see if its broken or leaking from anywhere because ive got one i havent used in a couple of years but im afraid if i put it in my tank itll leak soemthing out and kill all my fishes
