really great review! i have never used eheims (i cant afford them or justify spending the cost) and have 2 FX's myself- and i love them! thanks for posting this!

I want a grinding effekt in the vortex chamber. The small bioballs churn leftovers from feeding into small bits. This might be somewhat noisy though. If you want silence, go for the bigg bioballs and fill the vortexchamber up.
My FX has run like this for 3 years now. And I'm never going back to the original settings. The guarantie might be void though. So if you are doing this rebuild you are on your own. Don't blame me

Why do people insist on using bio media for mechanical filtration?
I like the idea but bio filtration should never need to be removed at all when doing maintenance on the filter.
With that said, its great to see other members noticing the benefits of the Fx5 when modded.

I've had my FX5 running over a year now-had no problems but must admit the flow rate isn't the same as the hype it's given. I've been quite disappointed with the power from the outlets. I'm seriously considering saving to an Eheim Pro 3 mainly because of its superior biofiltration-I have a Eheim 2252 internal to take care of the mechanical side.
I think this whole debate really is apples vs. oranges; to me they're two completely differently designed filters for two different purposes i.e. mechanical and bio filtration. You need to decide as an individual what exactly you want your external to do more of.

if you have a eheim 2252 then you know what a great filter eheim make the 2252 is one great internal filter i have had one running 24/7 for over 12yrsberserker;2172817; said:

i have had my 2080s for near 3yrs now and only striped them down 3 times to clean once per year
i do open them up every 6 months to change the but thats it
