Rope fish eating

Third video was delhezi and ropes, all those ornate video are still small, i think what @magpie is trying to say is when a ornate reaches 12”+ them its a whole different scenerio.

I do remember @Dr.B mentioned him having some ropes with his 18”+ LJ but its always a risk.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. We're not trying to be naysayers, just trying to help someone out. There have been quite a few poly / rope deaths in the forum and it's always really sad when it happens. Ropes can get long but they really don't get very thick, (and they move differently), so that's the danger. The ornates in the videos were still small, and... there's a lot of crazy **** on Youtube. ;) We have no idea if there was an issue later on after the video was taken. The forum is filled with knowledgable people with a ton of experience. As long as you have a plan / way to separate them later you'll be fine for a while.

@Polyaddict86 - I feel like I asked Dr. B about that specifically because I wanted to upgrade to a 180 and keep the ropes in it with LJs but he didn't recommend it. I'll see if I can find it.

I got it. Thanks for the advice.
If you see my ornate you would say: man, its such a risk!
Although its a baby (about 3"), it just atacked a synodontis petricola and a baby endlicheri in another tank of mine.
The ornate was living alone in the atual tank when the rope came. Funny, istantly the ornate realized thats something weird. There were something in the cave! The dorsal fins stretched and slowly the ornate went in the cave. When it were close enough the rope, the ornate was biten (sure the rope was still stressed, the first time in the tank). Since then nothing more happened. I think the rope established the dominant side.
Now they even stand above each other and theres no problem at all. Weeks ago, no fish could get close the ornate that he would atack.

Anyway, I think it will take a long time to the ornate grow up enough to be a threat.

It's funny, those little Ornates can be ornery little suckers sometimes with other polys. Not always, but sometimes they're like yours and don't want to share the poly pool.

The same caution applies to the Endli, even more so, if you plan on keeping the Rope with the Ornate / Endli eventually after you upgrade. Ornate and Endli should be fine together long term, though, as long as the Ornate decides to stop being a jerk. ;)

I'll stop now... I think you get it.

As with almost all larger and smaller poly pairings, there’s risk involved. I’ve found that lower jaws will be more opportunistic with anything they can fit into their mouths. So any rope with a lower jaw poly I’d be skeptical. With upper jaw polys I’d feel slightly better if there was a considerable size difference but you’ll still have to be careful. Since you’re growing them out together the chances might be better for the rope. But since I’m assuming the rope is longer than the 3” ornate, as the ornate grows it’ll try to assert dominance more. Just watch for that as they grow together. Once the ornate knows it’s “better” than the rope, it should be a while before you have to worry about the rope becoming a snack.

Yes, I got it. I apreciate your advices. Thats why I joined the MFK, to learn and to share.

As I said, it will take a long to the ornate and the endli reach the size big enough to be a threat. Even more that I dont super feed them. Now, its easier the rope eats the polys :D. So, Im not worried.

My friend seller of the LFS said something interesting about the behaviour of fishes. Even some of pacific species can be agressive. Its like humans. Each one has its own behaviour and all we can do is to watch how things happen in your tank.

Thanks for helping. Thats what Im thinking.
Soon I'll post pictures.

Sorry to be the big D but ornate and endli can hit 10”-12” in the next 8-12 months. Even with no power feeding they can grow fast, clean water can make them grow fast which is i know you always have.
I was just thinking the same thing. Those grow quickly more so then most other polys. Ive been chastised for my eternal disbelief of ljs with smaller polys so I'll not go into it fully. Just watch them. Remember a tiger doesnt change its stripes. Yours has already shown a potential for grabbing others. I hope it works out, trully I do.
I worry daily as I watch my teugs slowly out grow their poly and rope brother and sisters I hope it'll be ok but I feel that it may not. Both teugs are mellow now and dont even look at the others weird but the potential for catastrophe is there with the coming size difference.
