I have a 6 inch royal pleco and for some reason he seems really stressed out and his eyes are sinking in. I have had him in the same tank for a year and a half. Although I did have one before do the same thing and it died about a month later. I didn't know if there was anything that anyone would know about this. Thanks in advance for any help.

What are your water parameters? how big is the tank? is there driftwood and hiding spots?

Your Royal is in danger of death... sunken in eyes means that it has been stressed for awhile and its in danger of starvation..

Royals are wood and veggie eaters You need to have driftwood in your tank along with a regular diet of cucumber or zucchini.... I would feed the fish fast..

If it gets to the point where i cannot move by itself and its weak.. u can actually force it to feed, it wants to eat.. so put the pleco on top of the food.. that is the LAST resort way to feeding a pleco..

You need to act fast.. or it will die..

Assuming the fish has been healthy for the past 18 months. Then it's probably a newly introduced disease/parasite to the tank. You could try something like an internal bacteria and/or wormer.

I went down to check the tank this morning and he was dead. He had been eating more and growing more lately than ever. The eyes were not as far in as my last royal was. I was feeding veggies, plenty of wood in the tank for the whole time he was in there and ever had pleco pellets put in there. He was very active eating all the time... Makes me wonder if my water in the area might be too hard... Idk. I have never had a problem with any other fish. I have kept wild discus and everything in the tank that my royal died in before. Its too bad. Royals are one of my favorite fish. Everything else in my tank seem to be in great condition.

sorry for your loss.
sometimes, whats most frustrating is the lack of answers were left with.

Its not just wood ...the biggest Panaque killer is not having the right TYPE of wood. Normal driftwood doesn't provide the enzymes a Panaque needs to break down the wood. In the wild 70% of the Wood Panaques eat is Palm wood.
