Not at all ... Palm wood, South American palm wood is 90% of Panaque's diet in the wild.
Fortunately 75% of the Palm species growing locally are suitable as they are SA in origin.
Also its important to put in fresh cut wood almost weekly. They like to skim the first layer. Issue is it floats ...I weigh it down.

No. Too hard. They cannot eat it well. It would be like giving a person a frozen steak to suck on. They need medium density woods that they will be able to completely consume and digest. I boil the crud out of hemlock lumber, but most fruit tree wood is great. Alder works, too. Maple is fine, just boil it well first to get the sap out. I haven't tried palm wood. Maybe I'll hunt some down sometime.

*beat me to it.

I've tried Malaysian and african... I find my Royal enjoyed Malaysian more than African.. but it still tried to eat African wood...

As long as theres Malaysian driftwood.. they would do fine... But a diet of veggies is much better.

The way i see it.. keeping fish is a learning experience.. sometimes it works out.. other times you cannot explain why it happened.. but dont give up..

Taksan, I'm in upstate NY where could I get Palm wood, not only me but anyone else that my be in need of some... Maybe Lowes home depot or local hardware store? I dont know I googled right quick, palm woodbut didnt come up with anything, funny thing was I was about to pick up a nice royal about an hour away this weekend I have a lot of malaysian but after reading this may not get him after all unless I can pick up some palm, info apprecaited

I've not had a royal pleco before, but I have had 3 gold nuggets, and a blue phantom pleco die randomly. Eating and hanging out one minute, and then I look over and it's dead.

The only plecos I have had luck with are Common plecos, para plecos, and Red tails.

Sunken eyes in royal species are caused 90% of the time by poor water conditions. A large (75%) water change may have saved its life. I have seen a royal have eyes so sunken I thought they were gone to over night in good water look perfectly normal the next day.
