yes, mine had it on just one side. Still there a little but really hard to tell. Daily water 25% water changes for 2 weeks stress coat, and half dose melafix. Helped mine, but sometimes it will never go away

Gill Curl Question...

I have only ever seen pics of RTCs with Gill Curl, does it only effect RTCs? or have i just happened to miss other cats with it?

it affects all cats. its just that people often overfeed RTCS or do not provide ample filtration (cause they secrete a lot of waste from mucas, excrement and sumtimes vomit). therefore they r usually not very healthy. a rule of thumb is to provide a HUGEEEE tank or tub and great filtration to ensure top water quality. also, after they are over 16 inches u only have to feed them every few days or so. lastly, live food have a much higher chance of passing bacteria (especially live animals that live in water (ie fish) because fish transfer disease to other fish much easier than land animals do).

I got my RTC when a guy came in the petshop begging us to take it. He was already a good 7 or 8in. I regret so badly not asking the guy more about the fishes past. I assume he had outgrown the tank by the guys desperation to get rid of him. And he was defiantly only feeding live.. Took me a few weeks to ween him off feeders. He has horrible gill curl, you can notice it in my avatar. I don't think theres any hope of reversal at this point

im sure it will heal in time. the gills may not look perfect but it will get better. try not to worry. just keep water parameters high and ull be alrite. sum people think rock salt is really harmful to freshwater fish but if u just put a little bit it shud work like a charm.

just don't use the salt for long periods of time more than 2 weeks. Dehydrates the fish, and can cause the urinary tract to shut down after long durations. It's proven fact it's the cycle of salt in freshwater and saltwater fish. It works in reverse on both. The gills will likely never heal completely. And all fish can get it, but rtc are more susceptible than others. They are sensitive to poor water conditions. Gill curl and fin and tail rot are the two most common desieses you will see in RTC. The third being brown blood desiese.

I have only seen true Gill curl in RTC's and Planiceps catfish. I have never seen it in RTC x TSN or TSN. I have had both large and small RTC's with Gill curl and have never seen it cured. NEVER.
