Anybody had this problem with their RTCs?

One of the 'soft' parts of the gill is flabby (see the picture). The 'hard' part of the gill is OK and is closed snuggly so the gills itself is not exposed or anything. After close examination it appears that the 'soft' part of the gill has some small leisions/wounds? on the inside (see the picture). Water parameters are acceptable according to the test strip (also other fish are not affected).

While it does not seem to affect/bother RTC itself (eats and swims normally), it is a little bit unsighly and i wonder if this problem can cause more concern down the road. One of the reasons i post is because it yesterday stopped eating frogs (very unusual) though still accepts pellets.

The gill thing occured for close to a year already (not better not worse)- but i thought/hoped that it would go away by itself. Affected RTC's tank mates are all fine : another RTC, 2 gars and oscar ... and recently arapaima (it was added long after the gill thing occured). The diet includes everything (frogs, feeders, pellets, shrimp, crickets, lizards). RTCs are housed in a 3x2m pond/aquarium with 80cm deep water. The fish is 2 year old at around 2'.

I don't suppose this is gill curl? Is there anything i can do at all? I thought that leisions would heal by themselves.

PS: it was missing three whiskers since i got it ...<sigh> ... did not check the fish properly when bought it ...lesson learned

For comparison a healthy RTC. Note that all the plates are closed

Thanks for the input, RedTailKing. Hmmm, water conditions should not be a problem cos the other tank mate is fine. Food intake ... well, it is the most voracious of the pair (incidently this is the RTC that munched the paima before) - it eats like a pig! Tank size is definitely not an issue (never was). Stress ... hmmm what can cause that?

Surgical solution? Where i am gonna find a vet to do something like this. I am in Laos ... gonna see on youtube if someone made op like this before.

looks like gill curl to me, water quality could be an issue, i know some members have resolved this either by doing a lot of water changes aswell as adding salt or cutting off the affected area..
