i think the gill curl occur because of the water condition. it seem like the water abit clouded maybe because the water contain harmful algae? have u install uv steriliser in ur tank?

So, you are sure that this is gill curl? It occured quite some time ago, when the fish was still in the indoor set-up. None of the other fishes (including other RTC) has this.

I have a UV pond clarifier but i don't dare to install it to date cos afraid it will kill of everything in the tank (bad AND good) and then the fish will become fragile. But yes, it is a last of the last options to do.

Hmmm, interesting. turn off and on. Does not affect the life of a bulb? For how long do you have it on? What is the exact frequency? Might try that ^^ i am testing out my plant filtration system. How often you change water in your outdoor set-up. Do you have a thread on your set-up?

My other RTC is completely healthy. I am still waiting for some more replies in case someone actually had something like this (gil culr?)

till today, the bulb working fine. hopefully the bulb not gonna break because of my action. the reason i dont turn on the uv all the time is to avoid my uv kill all of beneficial bacteria in the tank. depend on how clouded the water was, usually i turn it on about 4 hours in a week.

how about ur plant filtration system? its working? i heard that it can control algae growth..

Too early to tell just got the plants in over the weekend - water hyacinte on top of one of the overflows (plastic container ... about 30-40 gallons with holes+bioballs and white cloth thing) ... in any case, the flowers are pretty

I will be updating on the results in my main outdoor set-up thread ^^ ... errrr let it run for couple of week (and let the plant establish)

PS: i must say though i hope my dissinfection was sufficient, cos i got the plants from the wild ... <sigh>

clove oil
You gotta be careful when using clove oil to tranquelize fish though, if you use to much you will actually kill your fish. I know theres another sort of medication you can use, ill do some more searching and post up the med soon.

like a few others have said-you have gill curl. its a sign of less than good water conditions. it doesnt effect all of your fish, just the most sensitive. you need to first test your water parameters. your nitrAtes should be around 40 ppm or less at all times... the closer to 0 the better your water is.

if your nitrates are high, you need to do a few frequent waterchanges a week to lower them-add aquarium salt and be sure not to over feed. ppl do use clove oil to sedate a fish to perform surgery, but if you dont know the dosage for the weight of your fish i would not advise it.. clove oil is also used to euthanize sick and damaged fish. there is a fine line between sedation and euthanization so be careful! lol.. i would not advise surgery on the gill if you arent 100 percent sure of what you are doing-you then run the risk of bacterial infections, and lower the fishs' immune system and he will be prone to all sorts of bacteria, parasites and etc..

waterchanges and lowering your nitrates are a start.. your water does look cloudy.. best of luck to you! i hope this guy heal up!
