I would definitely consider starting a Dubia Roach colony. I started mine almost a year in advance so I would have a large, steady supply of roaches before I got my monitors.

+2 but I say start 2 colonys!

Well I am not exactly sure what I am going to get yet so I don't want to start up a colony and end up with a red-tail boa lol. I have a little time yet for planning. I have to narrow it down though right now I am tossed between RTB, blue tounge skink, arg. B&W tegu, and sav. And hopefully nothing else strikes my interest last minute lol.

It would be best to have a staple of chicks or quails then mice/rodents. Mice have a higher fat content and birds are a healthier diet to go with

I would have thought baby chicks were loaded with fat? Can anyone point me to some evidence that they are healthier than rodents?

Thanks,
Paul

id go with either blue tounge or a rtb. but i agree an insect based diet is best

I'm no pro when it comes to Savs... but I have a 2 year old Tegu and he eats mainly ground Turkey... Is there a reason Savs couldn't also be kept quite helath with ground turkey as a main portion of their diet?

And since we are on a fish forum... I feed my Tegu 2~4" Cichlids all the time and he loves them...

My old sav regularly got the runs if I fed him any kind of ground/prepped diet, so I stopped. Not sure if it was just mine or if that's common, but I've heard of it happening with others.

And I also fed mine the occasional whole fish. Not a natural diet by any means, but I figured the variety would be good for him. My DUmeril's liked fish too, but that's a little more understandable.

A few times a month I give my ackies thawed shrimp and they love it. I know there's not much shrimp in the Aussie outback but whatever. :D

I used to make my sav cricket omlettes. I used to breed my own crickets so I had a ton. Just beat a few eggs, thow in a couple dozen crickets and pour them in a skillet. After it cooled I cut it up in chunks and put it in his food dish. He ate every last piece. I did this a couple times a week. The rest of the time he ate mostly mice and fish. He was great, but my wife made me give him up after he was around 3 ft. But I still have my fish!

Its diferent to give grounded turkey to a sav or to a tegu. To the tegu is aceptable because you can mix it with vegetables and fruit to make a complete fiber rich diet. With a sav you cant do that because they are carnivorus and grounded turkey lacks both nutrients and the fiber provided by woule mice. In my opinion savs sould have a diet as varied as possible of both vertebrade and invertebrade foods.
