Schooling Fish compatible with CA/SA cichlid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've kept bigger tetras with various cichlids. They were a group of 5 blood fins and 5 white and black skirt tetras with 2 Texas and 4 festae in a 95 grow out. It worked well after the blood fins were picked off.

Giant Danios probably your best bet. Ive had trouble with anything else that gets around that size(not fast enough to escape my hungry Cichlids). If you had a larger tank i would say Tin Foil Barbs or Silver Dollars.

So I'm hearing giant danios, ans Buenos Aires tetras. I reall like the ideo of tiger barbs though. Like a lot. How would they work out?

It all depends on the fish . I had barbs, giant danios and my 3 inch jag that I am growing out ate them one by one 3 days apart as soon as the lights went out . this went on for about a month until there was nothing left ...

My old JD reduce my school of giant danios in the past. He just waited to ambushed them at night while they were sleeping.

Get some congos and keep your fish well fed and they should leave them alone. And they stick together in a predator tank.

My advice is to get whatever you think looks best and be ready to replenish the school often. Your 85 gal will have 5 fish in it(2xJD, Middevil, GT & Mayan) that will easily be able to kill whatever tetra/barb you choose. Dither fish don't have a long life expectancy.

I had a group of 8 very large congo tetras in a vieja growout tank. I had no casualties, but the small 3in veijas really beat the hell out of the congos. Congos had a good inch+ on them and were faster. In a confined space, fish will get caught eventually.

Okay. I'll see what my lfs has that's cheap. I'm thinking of buying a crap load as I think there will be strength in numbers. How big do tiger barbs get?
