Schooling Fish compatible with CA/SA cichlid?

Is there a large failure rate with australian rainbows? I never see anyone recommend them.

I had them. They were great dithers for the four shy turquoise I had a while back, but they don't school for crap. Wasn't a failure for me. They were hardy. I guess it depends on what they are looking to get out of them. If its schooling movement, yeah....a failure. If its dithers and/or target fish, I would label them as a success.

I tried tiger barbs twice. Each night one would get picked off. The same happened with giant danios. Wait till they go on sale for a $1 at either Petsmart or Pet Supplies Plus, if there's even one by you. I do love the way tiger barbs look though.

I'm experiencing this now. Most of my tigers are around two inches or larger too. I've also had Black Skirt Tetras and for some reason they have always been left alone in my aggresive tanks. I'm not sure why. They aren't the best schoolers though.

In my experience with tiger barbs and larger cichlids, the barbs got taken out because they were harassing the cichlids and the cichlids wouldn't stand for it. Giant danios can be a little nippy as well, so that may be why they get picked off too. Tetras have always just wanted to be left alone to their schools, so have been ignored by my cichlids (granted I keep more peaceful cichlids too).

Filament barbs: bigger than giant danios, nowhere near as big as tinfoils. Mine are about 6". They aren't supposed to grow anymore.

Someday I want to do a Barb-only tank: Tigers, Filaments, Spanner barbs, Tinfoils. That would be lively. Essential link on barbs: http://www.seriouslyfish.com/group/barbs-relatives/

Silver dollars mix pretty well with most cichlids, just make sure there is'nt a huge size difference . Silver dollars to small may get picked on.

Awesome looking barbs. Great work. Their color really pops. They remind me a bit of oversized Denison barbs.
