seeing the forum title says "other exotic pets" i was wondering if anybody here has ever owned one of these cats???

it's serval.lol

i got a friend in Japan that has 2 along with a caracal.
they're pretty crazy cats, haha really active little ones(or not so little..)

and even if you live in CAlifornia, I think if you start a educational program or get a license, etc. you can probably keep one. i thought so..havn't kept up with the law these days..

You have to have a USDA license and a HUGE outdoor enclosure. It's just a huge hassle. It would be better for him to get a Savannah, no permits required, and much easyer to take care of.

Also, you will have to have the facility seperate from your house, and you will be inspected every month. It's just alot ot deal with.

oh, so it's different in Japan and US.what's the difference between the serval and savannah? I google imaged it and they look the same..and how big do the outdoor enclosures have to be?

I had a Serval growing up. It was the coolest pet i ever had. I hate cats, but these are cool cats. I wouldn't get a mixed Savannah of a Bengal go all out and get the real thing. Don't you have to have a licenses to have one in the states? I will try to find some pictures to post sometime this week.

as far as keeping exotics it differs from state to state. and california is the worst, if you read the gaming laws it states that anything that can be considered "wild" is illegal. it even includes cichlids and charicins, although you can find cichlids at every pet store and i had a dorado shipped to me no problem. this is only as i understand the gaming laws, if i'm wrong on this or if you have a servel connection please let me know!!!

a servel is the "wild" cat from africa, a Savannah is a servel mixed with a domesticated cat.

Absolutely no Chance On you getting a serval in California. At all.

And to the person who asked about enclosures. Go to www.exoticcatz.com and you can read full care sheets for just about any exotic cat.

I watched a serval for a friend that was on vacation a few years back. but I personally have owned 2 bobcats and one canadian lynx.

Serval pics anyone? I only see pics of them just standing there. Lets see some pics of PET servals!

Man would I love one of those... anyone know the VA laws. Maybe when I'm older I could pull it off, but unlikely.

Go to your states website, if you dont know it, just google it. Every state has one. Go to the Laws/Government section and type Serval into the search bar. And you have your answer. In my State, Washington, it is legal to keep serval, bobcat, and smaller exotics without permits, aswell as crocodilians. Some counties, such as King County have size limits on reptiles though. Bears, Lions, Tigers require permits, but smaller cats & exotics dont in my state. Pretty cool.

I may get an exotic cat someday, most likely a Serval or Bobcat, possibly a Geoffreys Cat as I like them aswell.:headbang2

It takes alot of commitment.
